Las respuestas cortas tipo “Yes, I do” o “No, I don’t” son mucho más frecuentes en inglés que sus variantes enteras tipo “Yes, I like pop music” o “No, I don’t like pop music” . Este tipo de respuestas elípticas son propias del inglés hablado y constituyen una marca de espontaneidad. Las respuestas cortas tienen como núcleo un verbo auxiliar, que sustituye el verbo lexical de la frase sin perdida de información.
Las respuestas cortas solamente pueden acompañar a una pregunta de tipo “Yes / No”. La estructura de las respuestas cortas es: Yes / No, sujeto + verbo auxiliar / modal /to be (+not). El núcleo de las respuestas cortas es siempre el primer elemento de la pregunta, como podéis observar en los siguientes ejemplos:
